Surface Locks
Surface Locks are used on furniture and cabinet doors. No mortising is required as lock mounts directly to the inside of the cabinet door making them easy to install. In instances where the lock can be viewed from the outside of the furniture such as curios and china closets, with glass sides, a half mortise or full mortise lock will provide a less visible alternative.
A strike is rarely used as the lock bolt ejects behind the adjacent door stile or frame. These locks are normally reversible meaning they will work both right and left hand doors.
These locks were used on late 19th and early 20th century furniture.
Lock Styles vary:
Quality Brass Surface Locks
Japanned Iron Surface Locks
Inexpensive Cabinet Door Locks
When installing consider:
- The wood thickness must be adequate in size to accommodate the lock and escutcheon.
- If the door stile is narrow the keyhole will look best if it is centered in the portion of the door stile which is seen (portions of the door stile may be hidden by cabinet construction).
The Backset is the most important measurement when replacing any lock!
