Changing the lamp shade will enhance your lamp and your home. Table lamps are often a focal point. By updating the shade a new fresh look is achieved for both your lamp and your home.
Personal taste should always be considered first and foremost.
- Lamps used in formal rooms most often use silk shades.
- Lamps used in less formal areas often use parchment, linen, and some silk shades.
Lamp Shade Color: It is best to match the lamp shade to a color in the lamp base when possible.
- The interior decor should be considered so that the lamp will harmonize with the room.
- White and light colored shades tend to provide more light than dark shades.
- Transparent shades provide the most light to a room.
- A pattern or dark colored shade tends to create more drama in a room.
- Opaque shades tend to focus the light downward for task lighting such as reading and writing.
Silk and parchment shades can often be interchanged with glass shades by simply adding or changing the shade holder.
Matching a Shade:If you are looking for a shade similar to your existing shade:
- Match the measurements of your shade to the new shade.
- For shades to look alike - a similar height can be the most relative measurement
Adequate air circulation between lamp shade and light bulb
- general rule: at least 2" between widest point of 100 watt bulb and shade

The lamp industry sizes shades by the bottom measurement.
Lamp shades are measured: bottom, top, side
- Hexagonal shades are measured from point to point across the bottom.
- Round shades are measured by the bottom diameter.

Shade Diameter: is often proportional to the lamp base. However thin narrow lamps can often use a small or a large diameter shade depending on the look you want
Shade Height: can be slightly less or equal to the height of the lamp base.
- Very thin narrow lamps can also use shorter shades just half the height of the lamp base.
- The bottom of the shade should conceal lamp socket/burner of the lamp when viewed at eye level.
- Height positioning of shade can be easily adjusted up or down by using a shorter or taller harp on lamp.
