During the 18th and 19th centuries English officers commissioned furniture makers to produce portable campaign furniture. Much of this furniture was beautifully made of oak, mahogany and walnut with polished brass hardware. Campaign handles, furniture trim and chest lifts were used on folding chairs, tables and chests designed for military travel. This campaign hardware was specifically developed so that furniture could easily be packed and carried on military marches. Usability drove these campaign designs producing a unique style of hardware. Out of the way, recessed handles enabled easy packing, brass furniture trim protected the edges and corners and chest lifts on either end of case goods made lifting simpler.
