Replacing old locks on antique
furniture can be challenging as many sizes of old locks are
not in production today. This can make finding an exact
match difficult and sometimes not possible.
The most important measurement when
replacing an existing lock is the backset.
Backset is
the distance between the selvedge edge and center of pin in
the keyhole. It is the most crucial measurement when
replacing missing locks.........the key when inserted
through your keyhole must line up with the pin in the center
of the lock keyhole. If the backset measurement does not
match it will be necessary to alter the keyhole in the door
or drawer of the piece of furniture.
Antique style
locks are available in 3 basic styles: surface, half mortise
and full mortise.

Keyhole covers and escutcheons
provide a protective and finished edge to the
keyhole. Styles range from simple insert escutcheons,
classic round covers to larger decorative plates in polished
and antique finishes

Key Blanks and Lock Strikes
Skeleton keys and key blanks
can be used on some antique locks. Key blanks have a plain
tab which can be cut to operate many locks. Skeleton keys
have the tab already cut and will work some locks.
