Lamp Shade Shapes
Important considerations when selecting a table lamp shadeMake sure there is adequate air circulation between lamp shade and light bulb (general rule of thumb: at least 2" between widest point of 100 watt bulb and shade).Size: lamp shades are measured: bottom, top, and side. The bottom measurement which is the bottom diameter is the measurement the lamp industry uses to size shades. Hexagonal shades are measured from point to point across the bottom. If you are looking for a shade similar to your existing shade match the measurements of your shade to a new shade bearing in mind that the height is the most important measurement to match. The majority of table lamps can use different styles or size shades than the shades they came with. Many lamps with glass shades can be converted to use a silk or parchment shade. Shade Diameter: is often proportional to the lamp base. However thin narrow lamps can often use a small or a large diameter shade depending on the look you want Shade Height: can be slightly less or equal to the height of the lamp base. Very thin narrow lamps can also use shorter shades just half the height of the lamp base. The bottom of the shade should conceal lamp socket/burner of the lamp when viewed at eye level. By using a shorter or taller harp the height of the shade can be easily adjusted up or down, on a lamp with a harp. Shade Holders for harp shadesHarp lamp shades are the most frequently used shade. A washer ring fitter slips over top of harp, cluster stem or lamp pipe. Shade is secured by a lamp finial. Use on lamps with a harp, a lamp socket cluster, or a standard 1/8 IP lamp pipe. This type of shade is also used on table lamps with a glass reflector shade
Chimney lamp shades are typically used on hurricane oil lamps. The shade has a ring fitter which slides
down the glass chimney neck to rest on the chimney bulge.
Clip on lamp shades are used on lamps which do not have a shade holder or
chimney. Shade clips onto light bulb using a 2 wire fitter. These
shades are often seen on dresser lamps, vanity lamps, buffet lamps,
and candlestick lamps.
Lamp Shade Shapes have both an artistic and functional impact on the lamp.
Shape of shade often has a similar form as the lamp base.
The direction and amount of task lighting is dictated by the shape of the shade - shades with a wide flaring base
cast a wider pool of light than more narrow drum type shades which tend to focus light.
Standard Shade Shapes: Hexagonal Lamp Shadesfrequently listed as hex, was a favorite in the early 20th century and is a pleasing addition to many pattern glass hurricane lamps of the previous 19th century.Bell Lamp Shadesbecame popular in the Victorian era and have remained a very useful shade for today's interiors. These are nice shades for figurine lamps.Drum Lamp Shadesbecame popular during Art Deco and Modern eras. Effective on tall cylindrical lamps.Coolie Lamp Shadesare the favorite for ginger jar lamps. These shades can also be advantageous on some contemporary lamps.Lamp Shade Color and MaterialLamp Shade Color: It is best to match the lamp shade to a color in the lamp base when possible. The interior decor should be considered so that the lamp will harmonize with the room. White and light colored shades tend to provide more light than dark shades. Transparent shades provide the most light to a room. A pattern or dark colored shade tends to create more drama in a room. Opaque shades tend to focus the light downward for task lighting such as reading and writing. Lamp Shade Style: Personal taste should always be considered first and foremost. Lamps used in formal rooms most often use silk shades Lamps used in less formal areas often use parchment, linen, and some silk shades |
