The Arts & Crafts movement changed furniture design in America. High quality craftsman style furniture originated in the early 20th century as a backlash to the Victorian furniture of the industrial revolution. Gustav Stickley a furniture maker and architect, blended the styles of Mission and Arts & Craft designs into furniture with simple lines and flat panes usually made of oak. His Mission pulls and handles were made of heavy beaten brass with an antique copper finish. This very adaptable mission furniture is still popular today. During this time in 1914 architect Paul Frankl came to the US. More designer than architect he influenced American design with his new modernism. Drawer pulls with sweeping curves and stepped designs were used on furniture made of exotic wood veneers and lacquered finishes. This very artistic period was popular through the 1930s.
