Selecting a bridge lamp shade
for a lamp where the shade attaches above the arm
A bridge lamp has an arm
extending from the body of the lamp to support the lighting
component and the shade. It is either a floor lamp or a
table lamp.
There are two types: 1. shade attaches above the arm (shown
below)
2. shade screws to socket
and hangs below the arm

Shades for
Bridge Lamps which sit above the lamp arm
Bridge lamps provide functional and decorative task
lighting. These table and floor lamps are useful in any room. Arm
may swing or be adjusted upwards or downwards for best light
position on or near a table or chair. Most of these lamps turn on or
off at the socket. The early styles, dating before 1900, had oil
fonts and chimneys.
The lamp socket, burner, and or shade holder will normally determine
the type of shade used on your lamp.
Shade style is often selected according to the style and period of
the home. Retro fitting these lamps often requires rewiring. We
offer a complete line of lamp wire and parts for putting these
useful lamps back into service.
Once you have used a bridge lamp you will never want to be without
one. |

Washer / Harp Lamp Shades for Bridge Lamps
Washer fitter in top of shade frame sits down on harp and is held in
place with a finial. This is a very common style of shade for table
lamps and is also used on bridge arm lamps with harps.
Shade should not touch bridge arm. If necessary shade can be raised
with a shade riser or taller harp.

Clip-on lamp shades for Bridge Lamps
Clip-on shades clip directly onto a light bulb. This clip-on
attachment allows this shade to work on most lamps without a shade
holder. Many bridge lamps use clip-on shades. Please note: they are
not all like the one pictured here.
Typically these shades sit lower on the lamp because of the position
of the wire clip. To insure that the shade does not rest on the arm,
side measurement should be considered when selecting your shade.

Chimney Shades and Chimneys
for Bridge Lamps
To select a chimney measure the holder to determine the bottom
fitter of the chimney. Height is a matter of personal taste, it is
normally 8"-10".
Chimney shades slide down over chimney and rest on the bulge.
The distance between the center of the chimney holder back to the
body of the lamp must be considered so that there is room for the
shade. An example: to use a 14" bottom fitter shade the distance
between the center of the chimney holder to the body of the lamp
should be at least 8" (1/2 the bottom measurement of the shade plus
1").
