Furniture Handle Help

Vintage, furniture, antique and cabinet handles have many similar characteristics. Whether replacing or starting new, understanding style, size and materials provides the necessary basis for choosing the best handles for your situation.

Handle styles are generally categorized by furniture periods. Existing holes and scaring left from years of use affect the required size. Original designs are reproduced in time-honored materials. Be aware there are handles, on the market today, produced from less adequate metals such as pot metal which are not as serviceable as traditional materials.

It is rarely possible to determine the manufacturer of a piece of hardware. Unfortunately the numbers, stamped into the backs of hardware, does not provide the necessary information. In addition many sources for old hardware are no longer in business.

When replacing a handle it is best to first determine the size, distance from center of hole to center of hole. Secondly determine the style you are looking for.
