Bed Fasteners, 5-3/4 inch

Bed Rail Fasteners provide a strong rigid connection between wood side rails and head / footboards.  Often seen on antique and vintage beds, these rail fasteners were made from the late 1800's forward. Many types have been made over the years and sizes do vary. See size tab for measurements. The additional picture displays more detailed dimensions.

Sturdy cast iron construction ensures long lasting strength and durability of bed rail fasteners.

When installing: mortise oval post pieces into headboard and footboard posts of wood beds. Rail pieces are surfaced mounted to the wooden side rails. See installation tab for more help.

  • One bed requires one set
  • Sold per set
  • Set Includes 4 Post Pieces + 4 Rail Pieces
  • Material: Cast Iron
  • Screws for mounting rail fasteners are not included as length of screw will depend on specific use.
  • See image with detailed dimensions for additional sizing information
  • Post Plate: 1-1/8" Wide x 5-3/4" High
  • See additional image for detailed measurement diagram
  • Before starting: Test fit male and female connection pieces together. If necessary small adjustments can be made with minor filing.

    Male Hook Plates

  • Male connector is screwed directly (surface mounted) to the inside of the bed rails..
  • Surface mount male connector to inside of bed rails, centering it vertically.
  • Flange should be even with end of bed rail.
  • Male connector has a cast flange. A saw cut groove should be cut to accept the flange.
  • Screw size should be the largest diameter which will fit the holes.
  • Length of screw should be almost the thickness of the bed rails.
  • By fitting and screwing these rail fasteners directly against the bed rail the male plate is stabilized and movement is minimized.

  • Female Connection Plates

  • Mortise into bed posts.
  • Mortises should be slightly inside of the center line as the end of the male hook plate is not directly centered on the end of the bed rail.
  • After the male connectors are installed on the bed rails attach the female connectors to them to determine placement for female connectors on bed posts.
  • The rail is often placed slightly to the inside of center on the bed posts.
  • Common height for modern beds is approximately 8" from floor to bottom of box spring. Height is often higher for older beds.
  • Trace outline of female connector to mark position. Be sure it is straight.
  • Mortise-out traced area to approximately 1/2" depth.
  • Screw into position.
  • Once installed Female connector should be flush with bed post.

    Great service!

Our bed frame broke while I was preparing our room for new paint. It was a holiday weekend, & I had new mattresses being delivered on the Monday holiday. After searching locally and on-line for a few hours, I was hesitant to order, since I needed the cast iron bed rail fastener before the new mattresses arrived. But, how to get them here in time was a challenge, since it happened on a Friday morning. I called and spoke to a lovely, very helpful, lady. She said they could ship overnight with UPS but that it would be pricey, since it was Saturday delivery. I asked for USPS express mail overnight (I am familiar with priority mail express since I work at a post office) and she made it happen! My package arrived the very next morning, and they were a perfect... even better quality than the original fastener that was used when our Amish bed was built about 27 years ago! Thank you so very much for the help and kindness and prompt service!!!

    Bed Fasteners

After designing a Shaker bed I researched and found the antique hardware from Paxton hardware. The spec sheet was helpful and straight forward. The mortises have an 11 degree side angle which proved more difficult to cut but even with a straight cut, the hardware holds very tight. The rail fasteners locked very well into place and the overall result looks great. I had to pay very careful attention to the two guides on the back of the fastener as they too are tapered and not evenly set apart from the screw holes. Be careful not to drill too large a hole for the guides or they will be visible when mounted. It would have helped to include a template, though I made mine, it took longer than expected because the guides are hidden when trying to insert the fastener. The product is excellent and the mailing time very good., only 3 days from ordering. Definitely a good buy.

    Great service, exact product

Communications with Paxton Harware is simple and fast. They answered my questions in a jiffy. The website offers exact measures and pictures and is very easy to navigate. I knew exactly the total cost and delivery time prior to my purchase. The specialized bed fastener was delivered in record time. It was exactly what I needed. Thank you Paxton Hardware for such an easy purchase!

    Bed Rail Fasteners

The fasteners I purchased were to replace similar fasteners on a bed more than 60 years old. The new fasteners were exactly what I needed. They were as advertised, and arrived promptly. My purchase was a satisfying experience.

A great product. Strong cast iron wouldn't think of using anything else for any bed, especially heavy duty bed construction. Would recommend going with the bigger size because of the ribbed shoulder. the smaller ones have pins which require more details for students to install.
