  • Lift Lid Box Locks are an excellent choice for small chests or boxes. Locks are solid brass with accurate construction. Made in England.

When installing: half mortise lock is mortised flush with wood on box interior. Strike attaches underneath surface of lid. Once installed lock plate shows on interior. Keyhole is all that is seen of exterior of box. When closing lid, strike drops down into lock. Lock mechanism is engaged with key. Backset measurement is  3/4".

When replacing locks: Lock-backset must match keyhole-location in furniture. This is critical so that key can be inserted through box-front into lock-keyhole. If these 2 measurements do-not match, it will not be possible to insert key through keyhole in box into lock.

    If Using Brass Wood Screws

Care is required when installing brass screws. While these screws are the best match for most antique hardware however they are not as strong as steel screws. The screw is easily damaged if the hole is not properly prepared.

The best practice is to first drill a pilot hole. Use a drill bit slightly smaller than the overall width of the screw, including threads, to drill the hole. Then use a steel screw, the same size as brass screw, to “cut threads” in pilot hole, by screwing steel screw into and then out of hole.
